WASHINGTON — The number of people who have tested positive for Zika has surpassed the 2 million mark.
In the past few weeks, at least 1,000 new cases have been reported in Puerto Rico, and the number of confirmed cases has risen to 9,700.
Many of the cases are attributed to the same mosquito that carried the virus to the island.
Some of the new cases are linked to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, which have been the first areas to see an outbreak.
A U.N. official said Monday that more than 100,000 people have tested negative.
Health officials are monitoring 2,000 cases in Puerto Ricans who arrived on the U,S.
mainland since the virus was first detected on the island last week.
